Sunday in the Park with George is a 1984 musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical was inspired by the painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat. A complex work revolving around a fictionalized Seurat immersed in single-minded concentration while painting the masterpiece. It has enjoyed several major revivals, including the 2005-06 UK production first presented at the Menier Chocolate Factory and its subsequent 2008 Broadway transfer.
The three-night only production at City Center was one of the most critically acclaimed theatrical events of the season, and now it is returning to Broadway opening the highly-anticipated new Hudson Theatre where it will play a strictly limited engagement for 10 weeks only. Be there for this stunning musical about the art of making art—this is not your ordinary Sunday.

Annaleigh Ashford – Dot/Marie
She is known for her work on Broadway as Glinda in Wicked, Margot in Legally Blonde, as well as for originating the role of Lauren in Kinky Boots, a performance for which she received a 2013 Tony nomination. Ashford won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance as Essie Carmichael in the revival of You Can’t Take It with You.
Jake Gyllenhaal – George
In his theatrical debut, Gyllenhaal starred on the London stage in Kenneth Lonergan’s revival of This Is Our Youth at the Garrick Theatre in 2002. Gyllenhaal said, “Every actor I look up to has done theatre work, so I knew I had to give it a try.” The play, which had been a critical sensation on Broadway, ran for eight weeks in London’s West End. Gyllenhaal’s New York Off-Broadway debut occurred in 2012 in Nick Payne’s If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet at the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Laura Pels Theatre. Gyllenhaal debuted on Broadway in 2014 in Payne’s Constellations at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre opposite Ruth Wilson, also in her Broadway debut. He appeared in four benefit concert performances of the Stephen Sondheim – James Lapine musical Sunday in the Park with George at the New York City Center on October 24–26, 2016. Annaleigh Ashford performs “Dot” and Zachary Levi is “Jules”.
