The Children
by Lucy Kirkwood
Hazel and Robin, sixty something nuclear engineers, have retired to a remote seaside cottage and a life of yoga, salad and soil-tilling. All very charming until you realise that this simple lifestyle, which harks back to a bygone age, is partially enforced. Just down the road is the wreck of the nuclear power station where they used to work. Electricity is rationed, the cattle are dead and the water not safe to drink. No wonder, then, that when long-lost colleague Rose turns up unexpectedly, Hazel is apprehensive. Rightly so, it turns out, for Rose, who is pretty, enigmatic and damaged, brings a reckoning.
