Covent Garden 2013
Opera Australia is excited to announce Lianna Haroutounian will sing the
role of Desdemona in Otello at the Sydney Opera House this winter.
Lianna Haroutounian is fast emerging as one of the most exciting Verdi sopranos of her generation.
The soprano made a universally acclaimed debut at Royal Opera House Covent Garden in 2013, stepping in at the last minute to sing Elizabeth in Don Carlos beside Jonas Kaufmann and Ferrucio Furlanetto under the baton of Antonio Pappano.
The triumphant performance put her in the world’s spotlight, and she was immediately invited to return for the Royal Opera House as Helene in Les Vêpres siciliennes.
She went on to sing Elisabeth in Don Carlos again for Opera Zurich and the title role in Tosca for San Francisco Opera.
Recently, she sang Desdemona in Otello at the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli to great praise.
“Haroutounian’s rich, full tones produced such tender pain and prayerful compassion that she created a real empathy with the audience.” – Bachtrack
Her engagement to sing with Opera Australia marks her Australian debut. She will make her debut at the Metropolitan Opera on New York in 2015 singing Elizabeth in Don Carlos and will return to the Royal Opera House as Mimi in La boheme in 2015.
Lianna Haroutounian will sing the first five performances: 5/7, 9/7, 12/7, 16/7, 19/7, before Natalie Aroyan takes over to sing 22/7, 29/7 and 2/8.
