Spring Awakening on Broadway 2015

Deaf West’s production of Spring Awakening floored the critics when it premiered in California, prompting the Los Angeles Times to write, It’s hard to enumerate all the ways in which Deaf West’s Spring Awakening is so very, very good. Now this unapologetically brilliant new production is coming to New York.

When it debuted on Broadway, SPRING AWAKENING’s raw and honest portrayal of youth in revolt shattered expectations of what a musical could do, earning it 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book (for writer, Steven Sater) and Best Score (for composer, Duncan Sheik). Deaf West’s innovative new production takes this already revolutionary musical to electrifying new heights by choreographing sign language into the production, intensifying the rift between the lost and the longing teenagers and the adults who refuse to hear them. Directed by Michael Arden, Deaf West’s SPRING AWAKENING is full of knockout performances, explosive music and soul-stirring emotion, but it’s only on Broadway through January 9.

About the Musical

Spring Awakening is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. It features music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. Set in late-19th century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. The original play was banned in Germany for a while due to its portrayal of masturbation, abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score. Spring Awakening received eleven 2007 Tony Award nominations, winning eight, including Tonys for best musical, direction, book, score and featured actor. The show also won four Drama Desk Awards, while its London production won four Olivier Awards. More at TheatreGold DataBase Here
