At a rigorous all-boys preparatory school renowned for its ancient traditions, the unconventional Professor Keating inspires his students to defy conformity and to live passionately. Academy Award-winner Tom Schulman adapts his own screenplay for this much-anticipated production.
Dead Poets Society was a 1989 American drama film written by Tom Schulman, directed by Peter Weir and starring Robin Williams. Set in 1959 at the fictional elite conservative Vermont boarding school Welton Academy, it tells the story of an English teacher who inspires his students through his teaching of poetry.
Jason Sudeikis
The script was written by Tom Schulman, based on his experiences at the Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, particularly with his inspirational teacher Samuel Pickering.
A scene in the original script showing Keating dying in a hospital was removed by film director Peter Weir, giving Todd’s gesture of standing on his desk the meaning of standing for one’s belief. Filming took place at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Delaware, and at locations in New Castle, Delaware and in nearby Wilmington, Delaware.
