The Lion King

The Lion King is a musical based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice along with the musical score created by Hans Zimmer with choral arrangements by Lebo M. Directed by Julie Taymor, the musical features actors in animal costumes as well as giant, hollow puppets. The show is produced by Disney Theatrical. The musical debuted July 8, 1997, in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Orpheum Theatre, and was an instant success before premiering on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theater on October 15, 1997 in previews with the official opening on November 13, 1997. The Lion King has now become the biggest gross income entertainment piece of all time just surpassed The Phantom of the Opera.

Covid

The magic of Broadway is born out of people gathering, in person and in real-time. Our return plan was created with the health and safety of our theatre employees, production staff, cast, and audience members always at the forefront.

Last updated and effective as of December 8, 2021.

Guests who wish to enter the Minskoff Theatre will be required to follow the policies outlined herein.

This vaccination policy is in effect for performances now through February 28, 2022For performances on March 1, 2022 and beyond, we anticipate a review of policies at a later date, and may include a relaxation of certain provisions, a modification or an extension of this policy as dictated by science.

In addition to a valid ticket, to be permitted to enter the theatre now through December 12, 2021:

  • Guests ages 12 and older will need to be Vaccinated (as defined below) with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine AND present a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport. (Guests 12-18 may use a government-issued ID or school ID, with or without a photo.)
  • Guests ages 5 – 11 may enter the theatre only when (1) accompanied by an adult who is fully vaccinated, and (2) presenting ONE of the following:
    • Proof of one dose of an FDA or WHO approved vaccine at least 14 days before the performance date.  -OR-
    • Negative COVID-19 PCR test performed by a medical provider taken within 72 hours of the performance start time. The test results must clearly show the date and time of the test.  -OR-
    • Negative COVID-19 rapid antigen test taken within 6 hours of the performance start time. The test results must clearly show the date and time of the test. This test may be performed by a medical professional or by using an over-the-counter testing kit.
  • Guests ages 4 and under are not permitted in the theatre.
  • Masks are required for all guests, regardless of vaccination status.

In addition to a valid ticket, to be permitted to enter the theatre beginning December 14, 2021 through February 28, 2022:

  • Guests ages 12 and older will need to be Vaccinated (as defined below) with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine AND present a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport. (Guests 12-18 may use a government-issued ID or school ID, with or without a photo.)
  • Guests ages 5 – 11 may enter the theatre only when (1) accompanied by an adult who complies with the theatre entry requirements, and (2) proof of one dose of an FDA or WHO approved vaccine. Any guest ages 5-11 whose first vaccine dose was fewer than 14 days before the date of performance must also present proof of (a) a negative COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of the performance time, or (b) a negative COVID-19 antigen test within 6 hours of performance time.
  • Guests ages 4 and under are not permitted in the theatre.
  • Masks are required for all guests, regardless of vaccination status.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

“Vaccinated” means on the day of the performance date as shown on the valid ticket, a guest has received (a) the second dose of an FDA or WHO authorized 2-dose COVID-19 vaccine, or (b) the single dose of an FDA or WHO authorized 1-dose vaccine. For International guests, 2 doses of any “mix and match” combination of an FDA or WHO approved Covid-19 vaccines is acceptable.

  • Any guest whose last vaccine dose (with the exception of boosters) was fewer than 14 days before the date of performance must, in addition to meeting these requirements, also present proof of (a) a negative COVID-19 PCR test within 72 hours of the performance time, or (b) a negative COVID-19 antigen test within 6 hours of performance time.
  • Proof of vaccination must come directly from the healthcare provider that performed the vaccination. Guests may display proof on a smartphone or present a physical copy. New York State residents, or anyone who received a COVID-19 vaccine in New York State, may present proof through the use of the Excelsior Pass (for more details, visit: https://epass.ny.gov) or any other digital app.

Entry will be denied for guests who do not provide the documentation as required above.

Other health and safety requirements may be required in addition to the vaccine. See further details on the Health & Safety Protocols.

The only exceptions are for guests who need reasonable accommodations due to a medical exemption or a sincerely held religious belief. In these cases, guests must provide proof of ONE of the following instead of evidence of vaccination:

  • negative COVID-19 PCR test performed by a medical provider taken within 72 hours of the performance start time. The test results must clearly show the date and time of the test.  -OR-
  • negative COVID-19 rapid antigen test taken within 6 hours of the performance start time. The test results must clearly show the date and time of the test. This test may be performed by a medical professional or by using an over-the-counter testing kit.

MASK REQUIREMENTS

Masks are required for all guests, regardless of vaccination status.  Masks must be worn at all times while visiting the Venue except when eating or drinking in designated areas. All masks must completely cover the nose and mouth and comply with the CDC guidelines for acceptable face coverings.

HEALTH CERTIFICATION 

By virtue of entering the Theatre, guests are acknowledging that all of the statements below are true the day they visit the Theatre. If any of the statements are NOT true, guest should not come to the Venue and instead use the exchange and refund policy  to re-schedule or refund their tickets.

  • I have not tested positive for COVID-19 through a diagnostic test in the past ten (10) days.
  • I am not and have not recently experienced (within the last 48 hours) any new or worsening symptoms of COVID-19
  • I have not had close contact or proximate contact with any person(s) confirmed with a diagnostic test or suspected based on symptoms, to have Covid-19 within the past ten (10) days.

AIR FILTRATION

The theatres have upgraded our HVAC systems to comply with CDC guidelines for hospital grade filtration, including MERV 13 filters, and have increased fresh outdoor air and air exchange to the greatest extent possible.

CLEANING

After each performance, high touch surfaces in both audience spaces and backstage will be cleaned in accordance with CDC recommendations. Once per day, the theatre will be thoroughly cleaned, and hand sanitizer will be stationed throughout the theatre. Upon entering the Theatre, all patrons will be encouraged to use hand sanitizer (unless medically prohibited) and to go directly to their seat unless they need to use the restroom or wish to purchase concession or merchandise items.
