“Address Unknown”
by Kathrine Kressmann Taylor
Based on a short 1938 novel by Kathrine Taylor, Address Unknown (‘Adressat unbekannt’ – or rather: ‘Addressee Unknown’) is the story of Max Eisenstein and Martin Schultz, two men with much between them. They’re partners in an art dealership, lifelong friends, and at one time Martin was even engaged in a torrid affair with Max’s stage-actress sister, Griselle. So entwined are their lives, they’re practically brothers. It’s 1932. Between them now lies thousands of kilometres of Atlantic Ocean, with Martin having returned to Germany, leaving Max behind to run their affairs in San Francisco. And a still wider gulf is beginning to emerge: Max is, a Jew.
