London News

What’s happening to Musical theatre in London, the latest crop can’t even run a year ?

Tim Rice’s From Here to Eternity has only survived for five months, one would have though this would have run for years. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Stephen Ward just making it to four months has the world gone mad or are they just not that good or interesting any more.

I for one, now in my fifties remember “From Here to Eternity” because it was one of the first movies I saw about sex, the beach and Montgomery Cliff. It was a picture for everyone, it had a love story, The little guy after successful man’s wife, oops late 1950’s sex shocker, a fighter who refused to fight, lots of boys, out at night drinking and dancing with the local girls, and the Second World War for dad and Frank Sinatra. One would think it would make the best musical ever.

The Reviews, Tim Walker from The Telegraph – “is highly enjoyable” (The Telegraph 27th Oct 2013) also Tim writes “and let me say straight away that I like it”

Michael Billington from the Guardian, “Highly professional”, “But, for all the dedication of the creative team, which includes Tim Rice as lyricist, Stuart Brayson as composer and Bill Oakes as bookwriter, one is left asking two questions: why now, and what does music add to the story?” (The Guardian 24th Oct 2013).

Time Out “Let’s be honest: an all-singing adaptation of James Jones’s sprawling novel From Here to Eternity sounds like an cataclysmically daft idea. But in actual fact, Tim Rice’s first new musical in 13 years very nearly works.” “Blandly affable Darius Campbell and pouting Rebecca Thornhill struggle to inject interest into poorly sketched characters, lumbering ballads and an asinine love story. You can help but feel that everyone involved knows the only point of the whole romance is the arse-baring love scene that closes the first half.” Time Out Andrzej Lukowski 23th Oct 2013.

Daily Mail “A ridiculous musical which could become a camp classic” “This one is a hoot, not necessarily by intention. It contains soupy tunes, glistening biceps, reality star Darius Campbell and his jawline, and generally more corn than even the leading breakfast cereal brands”. “Director Tamara Harvey gives everything maximum wallop. Cliches abound, from the smoulderin-loner scene in the Army dorm’s when a new guy arrives, to the inevitable assault course when NCOs try to break rebel Prewitt.”

Sgt Warden swaggers into Mrs Holmes’s living room and tries that subtle chat-up line I wanna go to bed with you. Nothing like getting on with the plot, is there? Leading man: Reality star Darius Campbell and his jawline lead the way. Before you can say star-spangled banner’s she is up on the table, down to her smalls. From Here To Eternity? From nought to 60 in three seconds, more like. From Here To Eternity is harmless nonsense. The Daily Mail Quentin Letts 23 Oct 2013.

Ok I have picked the bones out of all the reviews, but having read them all I guess there all basically just saying its OK. Lets face the West End is a hard town. One might think if they had let in run into summer that the Box Office would rise, of course I am not paying the bills and the sums must add up to closing, I am so sorry to see this go with out a fight, sorry Private Prewitt “Fight the Fight”

A little more coming on Stephen Ward

When the troubled Private Prewitt falls for the kind hearted escort club girl Lorene, and when his platoon sergeant, Warden, embarks on a dangerous affair with his commanding officer’s wife, Karen, the lives of both men are set on a course they cannot control. As war approaches, the worlds of the four lovers and the soldiers of G Company are dramatically ripped apart.”
