How I Learned to Drive
A Pulitzer Prize-Winning Memory Play by Paula Vogel
The Rules of the Road
How I Learned to Drive is a devastatingly powerful and surprisingly funny play that uses the metaphor of driving to navigate the complex landscape of trauma and memory. The story follows Li’l Bit, a woman looking back on her adolescence in 1960s Maryland and her complicated, abusive relationship with her charismatic Uncle Peck. Told out of chronological order, the play functions as a roadmap of her survival.
“Sometimes to move forward, you have to look in the rearview mirror—even when what you see is haunting.”
The Plot Journey
The play is structured through “driving lessons” given to Li’l Bit by Uncle Peck over many years. As she matures from age 11 to 18, the lessons serve as a cover for Peck’s grooming and sexual abuse. The narrative uses a Greek Chorus to play various family members, highlighting a domestic environment where misogyny and lack of boundaries allowed the abuse to remain hidden in plain sight.
Rather than a simple tale of victimhood, Vogel explores the “gray areas” of human emotion—how Li’l Bit initially found Peck to be the only person who truly “saw” her, making the ultimate betrayal of trust all the more profound as she eventually finds the strength to put him in her past.
Production History
Premiering Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in 1997, the play was an instant sensation, winning the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 2022, it finally made its long-awaited Broadway debut at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, reuniting the original stars and director.
