New Plays to Transfer on to The West End

1. Neville’s Island at The Duke of York Theatre

 

Neville’s Island, written by Tim Firth. Last year’s critically acclaimed revival at the Chichester Festival production will transfer to the Duke of York’s Theatre in October 2014. First staged in the West End at the Apollo Theatre in 1994, Neville’s Island was nominated for an Olivier Award the following year.

Follows the misadventures of four out-of-condition, out-of-their-depth businessmen on an out-of-control team-building exercise. Shipwrecked in the Lake District, menaced by wildlife and with only a sausage between them, our unlikely explorers battle the elements and each other as corporate bonding descends into a hilarious carnival of squabbling, French cricket and cagoules.

2. The Trials of Oscar Wilde at Trafalgar Studios 2

 

A thrilling dramatisation of the libel and criminal trials of Oscar Wilde by his grandson Merlin Holland and John O’Connor.

14 February 1895 was the triumphant opening night of The Importance of Being Earnest and the zenith of Wilde’s career. Less than 100 days later, he found himself a common prisoner sentenced to two years hard labour.

So what happened during the trials and what did Wilde say? Was he persecuted or the author of his own downfall? Using the actual words spoken in court, we can feel what it was like to be in the company of a flawed genius – as this less than ideal husband was suddenly reduced to a man of no importance.

3. To Kill a Mockingbird at the Barbican Theatre

Robert Sean Leonard as Atticus Finch (The Barbican Run 2015)

The place is Maycomb, Alabama in the Great Depression years of the 1930s. Momentous events unfold through the eyes of eight year old Scout Finch, growing up in a close knit neighbourhood with her older brother Jem and their summertime visitor Dill.

When their father Atticus Finch, a well respected lawyer, mounts a vigorous and compelling case for the defence of Tom Robinson, a poor black man accused of the rape of a young white girl, an idyllic world of childhood is changed forever. Through the drama of the trial and its aftermath comes a searching examination of freedom, justice, honesty and hypocrisy. A compelling, deeply moving story told with warmth and humour.

The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production of To Kill A Mockingbird will transfer to the Barbican Theatre from 24 June to 25 July 2015, with an official opening on 2 July 2015, following a UK tour.
