One of China’s greatest classical novels as famous in China as Romeo and Juliet is in the West recounts the love triangle between a young nobleman and two very different women: one his spiritual soulmate, the other a beautiful heiress. Featuring a libretto co-authored by Tony Award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly), this new English-language opera is by Bright Sheng, one of the most important Chinese-American composers today. Acclaimed Taiwanese director and playwright Stan Lai teams up with Tim Yip, the Academy Award-winning designer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, to bring this visionary work to life.

Don Pasquale has decided to cut off his live-in nephew in order to make him marry a wife of his choosing. Although his nephew Ernesto wants to marry his lover Norina, a young widow, the union is not blessed. Don Pasquale decides to marry himself in order to kick him out, and with the help of Malatesta, he is going to marry Malatesta’s youngest sister, Sofronia. But Malatesta is tricking Don Pasquale into marrying Norina in disguise in order to teach him a lesson and get Ernesto and Norina be together in the end.
