Starlight Express
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s high-speed musical spectacle on roller skates
Why it’s unique
It’s not just a musical — it’s a race. Performers play trains and rolling stock on skates, weaving through track built into the theatre. The original London production was directed by Trevor Nunn with skating choreography by Arlene Phillips, and a set design famous for tracks extending into the auditorium.
Plot Synopsis
Rusty, a young but “obsolete” steam engine, enters a championship race against slick modern rivals — including diesel and electric engines — all while trying to win the attention of Pearl, a first-class observation car. Rusty’s confidence collapses… until he discovers the mythic power of the Starlight Express, the unstoppable force that can pull him through doubt and into victory.
