2026 Tony Award Predictions: Nominee Frontrunners and Category Races
The nominations for the 79th Annual Tony Awards are just a month away (mark your calendars for May 5!), and the “Crystal Ball” is finally starting to clear. With the eligibility cutoff on April 26 fast approaching, we have six major storylines and predicted frontrunners that are dominating the Broadway conversation this week.
1. Best Musical: A Three-Way Clash of Styles
The race for the night’s biggest prize is a fascinating mix of tones. The current frontrunners for Best Musical are The Lost Boys, Titanique, and the heartfelt Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York). While Titanique has the “cult hit” momentum, many insiders are keeping a close eye on Schmigadoon!, which could serve as the “spoiler” following its strong April opening.
2. The “Chess” vs. “Ragtime” Revival Face-Off
In the Best Revival of a Musical category, it’s a battle of the titans. Ragtime is currently the critical darling, but the commercial powerhouse that is Chess at the Imperial cannot be ignored. While Cats: The Jellicle Ball and The Rocky Horror Show are virtually guaranteed nominations, the ultimate trophy likely comes down to the soulful resonance of Ragtime vs. the synth-pop spectacle of Chess.
3. Lead Actress in a Musical: The “Mother” and the “Florence”
Caissie Levy is currently the one to beat for her performance as Mother in Ragtime, earning some of the best reviews of her career. However, Lea Michele’s high-octane turn in Chess has made her a lock for a nomination. Watch out for Christiani Pitts (Two Strangers) and Marla Mindelle (Titanique), who are both campaigning hard for the remaining slots.
4. Lead Actor in a Musical: A Star-Making Moment
While Aaron Tveit is always a favorite, the buzz this season is centered on his Chess co-star Nicholas Christopher. His performance as Anatoly has been hailed as “star-making.” He faces stiff competition from Joshua Henry (Ragtime) and Luke Evans, whose turn as Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show has been the talk of Studio 54.
5. The Play Revival Race: Nathan Lane’s Next Tony?
On the play side, the Best Revival of a Play category is stacked. Nathan Lane is the early favorite for Death of a Salesman, but the category is crowded with heavyweights like the star-studded Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and the upcoming Proof starring Ayo Edebiri.
6. Featured Performance Powerhouses
The “Featured” categories are where the 2026 Tonys will get truly competitive. Andre De Shields is a massive standout in Cats: The Jellicle Ball, while Stephanie Hsu has captured hearts in The Rocky Horror Show. From the Ragtime camp, expect Nichelle Lewis and Brandon Uranowitz to be major factors in the nominations tally.
