About the Show
Fabulous From the First Feather
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a jukebox musical with a book by Australian film director-writer Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, using well-known pop songs as its score. The show is adapted from Elliott’s beloved 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert โ one of the most iconic Australian films ever made.
The musical tells the story of two drag queens and a trans woman who travel across the remote Australian outback aboard their beloved lavender bus โ nicknamed Priscilla โ to perform at a resort in Alice Springs. Along the way they encounter a colourful cast of characters, face down homophobia, discover unexpected friendship, and find that the vast red desert is big enough to hold all of them exactly as they are.
Produced by Allan Scott in coalition with Back Row Productions, Michael Chugg, Michael Hamlyn and John Frost, the show was directed by Simon Phillips (Melbourne Theatre Company artistic director) and choreographed by Ross Coleman. The original production debuted in Sydney in October 2006 and has since conquered the world โ playing in more than 20 countries across every inhabited continent.

The Story
Hop On Board Priscilla ๐
๐
Sydney to Alice Springs โ via sequins, feathers, heartbreak and disco
Act One โ Sydney to the Outback
Drag queen Mitzi Mitosis โ real name Anthony “Tick” Belrose โ is performing at a Sydney club when his estranged wife Marion calls with an unusual request: she needs an act for her resort in distant Alice Springs. Marion also reveals that their eight-year-old son Benji wants to meet his father. Tick reluctantly agrees, and persuades transgender woman Bernadette โ whose husband has just died โ and a third drag queen, the flamboyant Felicia (Adam Whitely), to join him.
The newly formed trio purchase a “budget Barbie campervan” they dub Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and set off west. Adam’s transphobic jokes cause immediate friction with Bernadette. The group arrives at a bar in Broken Hill in full drag, sparks a dance party โ then returns to find the bus covered in hateful graffiti. Crushed, Tick is comforted by his friends. When the bus breaks down, Adam buys lavender paint to cover the vandalism. They fix the bus with the help of Bob, a mechanic with a warm heart and a wife named Cynthia. The act closes as the group arrives at their next destination with renewed hope.
Act Two โ Hearts on the Highway
Bernadette and Bob form an unexpected, tender connection โ he remembers seeing her perform as a young “Les Girl” in Sydney. Their blossoming romance is tested when Cynthia, Bob’s chaotic wife, interrupts the trio’s performance. Meanwhile, Adam is chased and nearly becomes a victim of a hate crime before Bernadette rescues him. Arriving in Alice Springs, Tick finally meets his son Benji โ who fully accepts his father. Adam performs his ultimate solo number. As the night winds down, the three friends realise they cannot bear to go their separate ways, and the company closes the show in triumphant, disco-drenched celebration.

From the first moments when three divas hang suspended high above a silver-spangled bridge and belt out Downtown, the show never loses its spectacular, helter-skelter momentum.
โ London Evening Standard, reviewing the West End production
Note: Tony Sheldon is the only performer to play Bernadette across the original Australian, West End, Broadway, and 10th Anniversary productions โ a remarkable achievement.
