Fire at Eugene O’Neill Theatre: ‘The Book of Mormon’ Performances Canceled Following Three-Alarm Blaze

New York City’s Broadway district faced a major disruption Monday morning as a three-alarm fire broke out at the historic Eugene O’Neill Theatre. The venue, which has been the home of the Tony Award-winning musical The Book of Mormon since 2011, suffered “substantial damage,” leading to immediate performance cancellations and an indefinite closure for repairs.
The New York Fire Department (FDNY) responded to calls at approximately 10:00 AM on Monday, May 4, reporting smoke and flames emanating from the roof of the building located on West 49th Street. The blaze quickly escalated, requiring over 60 FDNY units and nearly 200 first responders to bring the situation under control.
FDNY Response and Cause of the Fire
According to FDNY Assistant Chief David Simms, the fire originated in an electrical room located between the fourth and fifth floors. Firefighters faced significant challenges navigating the building’s complex layout, which includes century-old rigging, catwalks, and heavy theatrical equipment. Chief Simms described the incident as a “deep-seated fire” that required specialized efforts to suppress.
While the fire was largely contained to the backstage and electrical areas, the damage is reported to be extensive. The fourth-floor electrical room, which houses vital lighting equipment and controls for the theater’s massive chandeliers, took the brunt of the heat. Additionally, significant water damage occurred as firefighters worked to extinguish hotspots between the fifth floor and the roof.
Thankfully, no audience members were in the building at the time, as no performances were scheduled for Monday. One firefighter reportedly sustained minor injuries during the operation but is expected to make a full recovery.
‘The Book of Mormon’ Performance Cancellations
In a joint statement released by ATG Entertainment (the theater’s owner) and the production of The Book of Mormon, it was confirmed that performances for Tuesday, May 5, and Wednesday, May 6, have been officially canceled.
“Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of the cast, company, and our audiences, we are taking the necessary time to assess the damage,” the statement read. “The building will remain out of service pending structural and electrical repairs.”
Ticket holders for the affected dates are being advised to contact their original point of purchase for refunds or exchanges. The production, which recently celebrated its 15th anniversary on Broadway, is working closely with city inspectors to determine when it will be safe to resume the 1,108-seat theater’s operations.
Impact on the Historic Venue
The Eugene O’Neill Theatre, originally opened in 1925 as the Forrest Theatre, is one of Broadway’s most cherished landmarks. For fans of The Book of Mormon, the timing of the fire is particularly unfortunate, as the production was preparing for its “Mystery Week” in June, set to feature special appearances by original cast members.
Industry experts suggest that repairing historic theaters can be a slow process due to the need for specialized parts and adherence to landmark preservation codes. However, theater representatives remain optimistic that the show will return as soon as the electrical infrastructure is certified safe.
