Broadway Shows 2026: Every Opening, Every Closing and What’s Coming Next
|
Theatregold · Broadway Season Guide · Updated 1 October 2026 Broadway Shows 2026: Every Opening, Every Closing and What’s Coming NextFrom a vampire musical at the Palace to a record-breaking Death of a Salesman, 2026 has been one of Broadway’s busiest and most unpredictable years in recent memory. Here is every show that has opened on Broadway so far this year, how long each one lasted, how it fared with critics and at the box office, and the shows lining up to open before the year is out. |

Broadway years rarely line up neatly with Broadway seasons. The 2025–26 season, which ran from summer 2025 to the Tony Awards cut-off in late April, saved most of its fireworks for the first four months of 2026: seventeen productions opened between January and April alone, with a staggering run of fourteen openings squeezed into the final four weeks of the season. Then the 2026–27 season began in earnest in late summer, and a fresh wave of star-heavy plays and new musicals is now heading for opening night.
What follows is a complete, show-by-show record. We have grouped the productions by status — still running, already closed, and coming soon — and for each one we have included its theatre, opening date, closing date (or current scheduled end date), and an honest read on whether it was a hit, a respectable limited run, or a disappointment. We have also included the long-running shows from earlier years that took their final bows in 2026, because for many theatregoers those closings were the biggest Broadway news of the year.
|
A note on dates: Broadway shows begin with a run of preview performances before their official opening night, which is when critics publish their reviews. All the dates below are official opening nights unless otherwise stated. “Scheduled through” dates are current at the time of writing and can change if a show extends or closes early. |
The Big Picture: How 2026 Played Out on Broadway
The headline story of 2026 is that Broadway’s spring was dominated by screen adaptations and starry revivals, and audiences turned up for most of them. Weekly grosses hovered around $40 million across 40 open theatres in April, and the 2026 Tony Awards on 7 June, hosted by P!nk at Radio City Music Hall, handed out prizes to an unusually wide spread of productions.
Schmigadoon! won Best Musical, along with Best Book and Best Original Score for creator Cinco Paul. Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman took six awards, including Best Revival of a Play, making it the most Tony-decorated play revival in Broadway history. Ragtime won Best Revival of a Musical, plus leading acting prizes for Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy. The Lost Boys and Schmigadoon! each left with four awards, and John Lithgow collected his third Tony for playing Roald Dahl in Giant.
Not everything soared. Beaches, the season’s most traditional new musical, was shut out of the Tony nominations and closed within weeks. Several high-profile plays ran their limited engagements and departed in June and July, and the summer saw the end of some genuine Broadway institutions, including Moulin Rouge! after seven years at the Al Hirschfeld.
Still Running: 2026 Openings You Can See Right Now
Five productions that opened on Broadway in 2026 are still playing as of 1 October. Here is the full rundown, from the biggest hits down.
The Lost BoysPalace Theatre · New musical |

|
Read More on “The Lost Boys” HereThe last show to open in the 2025–26 season turned out to be one of its biggest commercial bets to pay off. Based on the 1987 Joel Schumacher vampire film, The Lost Boys is directed by Michael Arden, with a score by the LA band The Rescues and a book by David Hornsby and Chris Hoch. It tied with Schmigadoon! for the season’s most Tony nominations (12) and won four, including a featured actress award for Shoshana Bean as the boys’ mother, Lucy. How it’s doing: Very well. The show has been playing to roughly 97% capacity in the 1,600-plus-seat Palace, regularly grossing around $1.5 million a week through the summer, which places it among Broadway’s top ten earners. With no closing date set, it is the 2026 musical most likely to still be running this time next year. |

How it’s doing: A genuine success story. Strong word of mouth, a Best Musical win and a cast album released in August have kept it at close to full houses, and it has now extended twice — first to January 2027 and then to April 2027. A North American tour is planned. Ana Gasteyer, a Tony nominee for the role of Mildred, played her final performance on 6 September. |

Rachel Zegler stars in Jamie Lloyd’s Evita at the Winter Garden from March. The spring brings Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd and Sarah Paulson in Bess Wohl’s Small Mouth Sounds, the West End hit Paddington the Musical, Prince’s Purple Rain, Lincoln Center’s The Sound of Music and Neil Patrick Harris in Damn Yankees.
Theatregold Verdict: What 2026 Told Us About Broadway
Three lessons stand out. First, a great limited run can be as lucrative as a long-running musical: Death of a Salesman and Every Brilliant Thing were out-grossing Disney shows with tickets averaging over $200. Second, playful, knowing musicals carried the day. Schmigadoon!, The Rocky Horror Show and The Lost Boys all trade on audiences’ affection for something familiar, and all three are still running. Third, nostalgia alone is not enough: Beaches had a famous title but failed to give critics or audiences a reason to choose it in a crowded spring.
For anyone planning a New York trip this winter, the window is unusually rich: three Tony-winning or Tony-nominated 2026 musicals are still running, Paranormal Activity is perfect for October, and the run of starry autumn openings from Other Desert Cities to Much Ado About Nothing means the best seats will go quickly. We will update this guide as the new shows open and the reviews come in.
